Video chat with people from other countries
International video chat is where random matching gets interesting. Strangerio connects people from 150+ countries, translates text messages as you go and matches shared interests even when you picked them in different languages.
How matching works across borders
Matching looks nearby first, then worldwide. In practice, your next match could be in your own city or six time zones away, and you won't know until they say hi. The chat shows which country each person is connecting from.
Interests are the best way to steer it. Pick up to five and people who share one get matched with you first. They work across languages: choose “music” and someone in Madrid who picked “música” counts as a match.
Live translation for text chat
Open the messages panel during a call and write in your own language. The other person reads it in theirs, their replies arrive in yours, and one tap shows you the original.
Translation covers text, not speech. Free users get roughly 2,000 characters a day, which is a long conversation's worth of messages, and Strangerio Plus makes it practically unlimited. Most people end up talking in whatever language they share and typing when they get stuck.
Picking countries with Plus
Random is the default, and for most people that's the fun of it. But if you want to video chat with people from somewhere specific, say you're learning Spanish or moving to Japan next year, Strangerio Plus has a country filter. Choose up to five countries and you're matched with people there.
You don't have to pay for it, either. Invite friends who join and start chatting, and you earn Plus days.
Time zones: who's awake when
Who you meet depends a lot on the clock. A few time-zone facts explain most of it:
- A London evening is already past midnight in India and the small hours in Japan and Korea.
- Nine at night in New York is the middle of the night across most of Europe.
- Late evening in California lines up with the next afternoon in Australia.
- Want to meet Europeans from the US? Your morning is their lunch break or afternoon.
A little etiquette goes a long way
Small things land differently across borders. A loud “what's up” reads as friendly in the US and a bit much elsewhere. Asking someone's age is normal small talk in some countries and rude in others. When in doubt, ask about their city, the food or what they're up to tonight.
Don't reduce someone to their country, either. People get tired of answering the same clichés about where they live. And the basics still apply: it's 18+ only, links are blocked in chat, and nobody abroad needs your number or your money.
Practicing a language? Say so up front. Most people are happy to slow down or correct you, and plenty will suggest a swap: ten minutes in your language, ten in theirs.

Common questions
Which countries are people from?
People join from 150+ countries. Who you meet depends on the time of day and your interests, and with Plus you can pick up to five countries yourself.
Do I need to speak English?
No. Lots of people use it as a common language, but text messages are translated live, so you can write in your own. Voice isn't translated.
Can I use it to practice a specific language?
Yes. Add “Language exchange” as an interest to meet people who want to practice too. With Plus, the country filter puts you in touch with native speakers directly.
Can people see exactly where I am?
They see your country, nothing more precise. Calls are relayed through Strangerio's servers, so your IP address is never shared with the other person.
Why do I keep meeting people from my own country?
Matching tries people nearby first, so during busy local hours you'll mostly meet people close to you. Interests that are popular abroad, or the country filter in Plus, widen the mix.
What happens when my translation allowance runs out?
Chat keeps working, but messages are no longer translated until the next day. Strangerio Plus removes the practical limit.
